The Four Revolutions Of Mankind

Three scientific revolutions have transformed humanity. Before Copernicus, we believed the earth was the center of the universe and that everything revolved around us. Before Darwin we believed we were special, but he showed us our kinship with the animals. And before Freud we believed we were fully responsible for all our thoughts and actions.

Now, we may be in the midst of a fourth revolution.

Machines are beating our champions at chess, Jeopardy!, and Go. A system of complex code is better at anticipating the onset of psychiatric disorders than psychiatrists. And a three-year-old algorithm can beat the top lawyers at identifying legal issues at a fraction of the time.

It’s no longer possible to believe humans are better at thinking than everything else.
