The First Scientist’s Discovery

Science is pattern recognition.

If you find a regularity in the past behaviour of the universe that predicts future behaviour, we call that a law of nature.

The first to explain the world through natural laws, rather than magic or myth, was a Greek philosopher called Thales.

And he had the idea that existence and everything in it was made out of the same primordial substance.

Although he got the substance wrong, he created a new way of thinking which led us to discovering the real—meaning the indivisible—building block, the particle.

Everything that we can see is made out of particles, including ourselves.

That means we are not unique.

But we are special.

For our particles can be traced back to the stars that blew up over five billion years ago and ultimately the big bang.

Depending on where you draw the line, we are the big bang watching itself.

Not a bad discovery for someone who wore a toga.
