The Perfect Sleep Routine

Some sleep experts say routine is everything: you should sleep and rise every day at the same time. Others believe your body knows best: go to bed when sleepy and get up when it feels right.

My smug and unschooled ego insists it lies in the middle.

Set your alarm at your desired time and only go to bed when you know you’ll fall asleep quickly.

Why does this work so well? Because your body knows how to sleep but not when and for how long. You need to teach it.

So choose a waking time and go to bed a little later than you’d like. If you wake up to your alarm and feel unrested, turn in 15 minutes earlier than the night before.

Keep increasing your time in bed until you wake up restored and fresh.
