When Things Become Too Much

Our minds work similarly to a radio without an off switch. It’s always broadcasting. And depending on your current mood and life situation, the channel may be stuck on Gloom.fm.

Which can get a little tedious. Especially if it’s reporting your life could be more interesting and meaningful if you were doing something else, because then it becomes hard to enjoy anything.

Here are a few simple ways to bring some joy back into your life right now:

  • Perk up your ears and notice at least 5 different sounds.
  • Bring your awareness to your body and notice at least 5 things that are touching your skin.
  • Focus on your breathing and follow its journey from inhale to exhale for at least 5 breaths.

You probably noticed how each of these exercises is quite entertaining. Not Red Wedding entertaining, but still pretty good.

More importantly, it should have created some distance between you and your thoughts. Instead of being glued to the speakers of your gloomy radio, it probably felt more like background noise.

That’s the power of connecting with the external world.

Whenever you grow tired of the reruns inside your head, remember: just because your mind is talking doesn’t mean you need to listen.

You always have the choice to turn your attention away.
