Why Are You Hitting Yourself?

Knowing that we’re dependent on the sun, trees and bees is different from feeling it.

Our feelings move us far more strongly than our thoughts and opinions. If we want to live in harmony with our environment, we must feel that dependence. But our feelings are limited to the happenings inside our skin.

What makes things even more difficult is that we don’t identify with what we sense. Instead, we consider ourselves to be the ‘I’ that watches the sensations. And that ‘I,’ often called the spirit or soul, is not thought to be earthly. And to live in the physical world as a being from the spiritual world means to feel like an alien.

That explains our capacity for destruction. Beings who have nothing in common with their environment are unlikely to be friendly toward it.

But like the body relies on bone, flesh and blood—we rely on the earth, solar system and galaxy.

So it’s in the benefit of your and our existence to be kind to the environment. This doesn’t mean we must. But to be hostile to the environment is like hitting yourself. You’re not going to participate in the hitting unless you’re getting something good in return.

What is the goodie we’re getting?
