You Can’t Have Your Cake And Eat It

Our culture demands we finish the impossible by yesterday.

This obsession with productivity leads us to be very practical. If you bump into something that doesn’t directly contribute to getting it done, you don’t care.

But what is ‘it?’ ‘What’ needs getting done?

Few of us have a satisfying answer to that question. Most answers revolve around eliminating discomfort and increasing happiness.

But that only leads to further questions.

Because happiness is dependent on what we want now. And what you want now is unlikely to be the same as what you want later.

Even if our desires somehow remain the same throughout our lives, many of them are vying for our attention at the same time.

Which desire do you satisfy first? And can both desires be satisfied at once? Or are they opposing?

Being practical has never been more difficult.
